The first weekend of super regionals has certainly brought some unexpected results, and with those results, a new band taking the no. 1 position in the rankings. Most notably, this is Carmel's first no. 1 ranking ever, despite being named national champion last season.

In Indianapolis, Carmel edged out Avon for the second time this season. However, Avon won the prelims competition and kept it close in finals with just a quarter of a point gap. Castle's third place finish is pushing them much closer to the lock category for national finals in a few weeks, and Union's fourth place finish is keeping them in the discussion for a finals spot as well.

At St. Louis, Broken Arrow won another champion title, but wasn't too far ahead of second-place Blue Springs and third-place O'Fallon Township. This isn't the first time Broken Arrow has scored lower than expected at St. Louis, and the band has finished in the 80s many times. However, the last time there was a similarly close margin with second place was in 2010, when Carmel was 1.3 points behind BA in finals, a slightly larger gap than the 1.25 spread that separated BA from Blue Springs. That may say more about how good Blue Springs — and similarly O'Fallon — is this year, but the placements are affecting the rankings of all three groups.
