The 2016 San Jose Regional was held Oct. 22 at San Jose State University. Clovis West won with a narrow lead over former champion Saratoga.
It was a close and exciting competition, with so many evenly-matched competitors in one venue. What's even more exciting is getting to see the top three bands compete again next weekend at the Long Beach Regional.
Analysis
When Homestead went to Grand Nats last year and placed 19th overall, it showed us just how competitive band in this region can be on a national scene.
The battle for first, we believe is between three groups: Homestead, Lynbrook, and Saratoga. These three groups have earned some close scores early this season and are all in a position to push grab the top spot.
The next three bands will include Amador Valley, Clovis West, and James Logan.
Clovis West and James Logan both placed in the top four groups at last year's event, but so far this season, Amador Valley is scoring very close behind James Logan. It's hard to tell if that's because Logan is performing at a lower level or if Amador Valley is performing at a higher level, but we'll find out this weekend.
The last few placements could go to several different groups, but we're picking Damonte Ranch, Live Oak, Santa Teresa, and William S. Hart. Damonte Ranch and Hart are returning finalists, but the other two bands either didn't attend or didn't make finals last year. Santa Teresa has had a strong season so far and Live Oak looks to be making a push back into finals.
Fun fact: Independence and Live Oak are former champions of the Summer National Championships, the original BOA marching band competition.
