Usual suspects wins big events across Eastern U.S.

The biggest suprises this week did not come from the regional champions, with each of the four regional or super regional champions having won at least one contest in 2022.

The Johnson City Regional saw Dobyns-Bennett go head-to-head with 2019 champion Lafayette and fellow Tennessee powerhouse Franklin.

Dobyns-Bennett earned a decisive victory, winning the top spot and sweeping captions in both prelims and finals. Lafayette took second place about 1.5 points behind DB. Both Franklin and Cass earned the same score in finals — an 85.25. Ties are broken by higher general effect score which gave Franklin the third place spot ahead of Cass.

The venue certainly has it's challenges, including a narrow distance separating the stands and the front sideline, but also a long history, having hosted the Grand National Champions from 1981 to 1983.

But the biggest event of the weekend was the Indianapolis Super Regional, where we saw Carmel and Avon go head-to-head at their second BOA event this season. The two groups finished just 0.05 of a point apart in prelims, with Carmel winning visual, Avon winning general effect, and the two groups tying in visual. The finals results were not as exciting with Carmel sweeping captions and growing their lead to 0.625 points. The two bands will face off again at ISSMA state finals and the Grand National Championships.

William Mason earned third with Brownsburg in fourth and O'Fallon Township in fifth, each group separated by about 1 point. Union and Fishers rounded out the top half of finals in sixth and seventh place, respectively.

In Orlando, Tarpon Springs took the top spot, sweeping captions ahead of Broken Arrow. This was a sharp reversal from the last time Broken Arrow traveled to Orlando and beat Tarpon Springs by a nearly identical margin.

Owasso took third place, with Stoneman Douglass and Timber Creek finishing close behind in fourth and fith.

Kiski Area won another decisive at the Washington DC regional in College Park, Maryland. The band swept captions and scored over 3 points ahead of second-place Independence, from Virginia. Third place went to North Carolina's Green Level High School.
