The 2018 Oxford, Ohio, Regional will be held Sept. 22 at Miami University, replacing the Dayton Regional typically held at Welcome Stadium. In 2017, Carmel was named regional champion based on prelims results after finals was cancelled because of inclement weather.

Our Thoughts
There’s really no question of what group is going to win this regional. As a four-time national champion, including consecutive titles the past two years, Carmel is in a league of their own. Their show certainly won’t be complete this weekend, but the portion they have on the field will definitely show why they’ve had so much success in the activity for decades.

Centerville has consistently placed in the top five at various Ohio regionals for the past decade. With the absence of several of the national semifinalist-caliber bands that typically attend this regional, the band is in a good position to earn a silver medal.

Lake Central and Lakota West both competed at the Toledo Regional last year, each earning a finalist position. In Oxford, both groups have the potential to finish in the top half, and one of the two is likely to earn the bronze medal.

Two Kentucky schools are poised to earn spots in finals. Bourbon County and Russell County are both previous regional finalists who should be safely back in. Bourbon County has made finals the last two times they attended the Dayton Regional; however, they haven’t actually performed in finals competition because it was rained out both years. Hopefully, that won’t be an issue this year. Russell County had a stand out year in 2016, earning a finals spot at both the Clarksville Regional and Indianapolis Super Regional. While they seem to have taken a small step backward last year, we’re expecting a return to their success of 2016.

Miamisburg has consistently made finals at regionals across Ohio since 2014. This year should be no different, in fact, the group could even be able to push into the top half of finals.

Bellbrook and Decatur Central are two groups that last performed in finals in Southwest Ohio in 2016. While Bellbrook didn't’ attend the regional in 2017, Decatur Central did but finished just one spot away from finals.

Franklin Central or Greenfield Central are two groups with a chance of earning that last spot in finals. Making finals would be a historic accomplishment for either school. Both have finished close to finals at regional and super regional competitions many times.

While it’s hard to make predictions about a group that hasn’t performed at a BOA event since 1996, there is one group that could also find themselves in finals. Beavercreek is one other band that we need to pay attention to. They’ve had much success at local competitions early in the season beating groups like Centerville and Lakota West in past years.

This year’s regional may be a little bit less competitive than Dayton regionals in the past, but we still expect an exciting day and night of captivating performances. That is, as long as the rain stays away.
