In 2016, Marian Catholic will be competing at the Indianapolis Super Regional and the Grand National Championships.

Marian Catholic competed at the Indianapolis Super Regional and the Grand National Championships.

Marian placed 3rd and won the music caption at the Indianapolis Super Regional, putting them firmly in a position to make Grand Nats finals, but only a fool would bet against Marian Catholic making finals.

At Grand Nats, they placed 8th overall, winning and sweeping caption in class AA. Just another year of band at Marian Catholic, where missing finals is a prediction no one would ever make.

Marian Catholic competed at the Indianapolis Super Regional and the Grand National Championships. They had incredible performances in every round of every competition and earned some incredible placements as well. They finished in a distant third behind Avon and Carmel at the Indy Super Regional, then finished tenth in finals at Grand Nats. It was crazy to see such a rapid change between Homestead and Marian Catholic placements at the two competitions. At Indianapolis, Marian Catholic beat Homestead by a point and a half. Then at Grand Nats, Homestead beat Marian Catholic by two full points. That's a difference of three and a half points in a just a couple of weeks.

This consistent Grand Nats finalist made finals yet again with "The War of Art" and their 9th place finish. However, this band has multiple national titles to its name and this year's placement was definitely an outlier compared with 2011 and 2012's fifth place finishes. This year was the first year in a long time that spectators were actually questioning Marian's chances of making finals after its disappointing 12th place finish in prelims at St. Louis. In typical Marian Catholic fashion, they cleaned up well before Grand Nats. The real question is, will they ever break their Grand National finalist streak?

  1. I think you have to take a look at more than one judging panel and one performance. For ex., MC is 6th in semifinals (and in finals comfortably). This isn't to defend any points raised here, but with ANY high school band, how good is your best performance. How much is it capable of? Personally, I'd love to see more bands like Marian and Lawrence Central, who play as a full ensemble. Unfortunately, right now many of the finalist bands have great visuals and some solid brass players, but have ignored woodwinds. It would be nice to strike a balance because the band in marching band is being lost to a large degree. But not with this group.

  2. Marian was actually 9th

  3. 6th in semis about 3-4 points ahead of 13th place, so in finals comfortably. At finals, they dropped to 9th and deservedly so, IMO. This year's program is wonderful though.
