  1. Texas has 10 of the top 20? Incredible

    1. 4 of the top 20 are in the same school district in in Texas. Leander ISD.

    2. but why not in front of BA????? something is not right

      Delete
    3. There are two school districts in Texas with three schools in the top 20. Leander ISD (mentioned above) and Lewisville ISD with Flower Mound, Hebron, and Marcus.

      Delete
    4. Leander ISD has 4 bands in the top 20, that's stout coming from one district
      1. Leander
      2. Vandegrift
      3. Vista Ridge
      4. Cedar Park

    5. Neisd has reagan and Johnson

      Delete
    6. Austin metro area (Cedar Park/Round Rock/Austin) got 1st 3rd, 5th and 11th at the Texas UIL 6A state championship finals tonight!

      Delete
    7. The BOA Grand Nationals has 13 of the bands in the HornRank top 30 competing this week. Last weekend the San Antonio Super regional had 15 of the HornRank top 30 bands competing. Are these two events considered similarly in terms of weight and prestige?

      Delete
    8. I will be hoping to see Camdenton and Rosemount somewhere in the TOP 40 in the next updated Ranking.

      Delete
    9. NOT Leander ISD, its Lewisville ISD. This district has amazing music programs!

      Delete
    10. Are these even being updated? You click on the bands and the "information" behind is outdated.

      Delete
    11. And still, BOA won’t take Grand Nats to Texas or Florida or out west. Shameful. The Indiana bands are good, but they also pretty much own the Oil Can getting to rehearse there, State Championships there, Regionals and Super Regionals there. BOA needs to fix this somehow and allow Grand Nats to move around more.

      Delete
    12. I agree that the closer you are to a stadium the better your chances are. It would be nice if the Super Regionals moved around as well.

      Delete
    13. Domes....there needs to be more domes. There are Super Regionals at each of the domes that have the capacity. These can't be rained out like smaller regionals are.

      Delete
    14. yes it is Leander ISD that has several bands in the top 20. LISD has made great strides in it's band programs. I will say all of the students in all school districts are working hard to get on this list. I am a Leander High school parent and I can say that their show is good and the students have put in many long hours to get there. (as I am sure the other high schools are too.)

      Delete
    15. Indiana bands do not get to rehearse at Lucas Oil. I have friends from Avon and Carmel and Brownsburg and none of them rehearse at LOS. Went to Florida for Regionals this year and it helped us understand better why they do hold it at LOS. We have no other location that would begin to hold all of the fans for Indiana State Finals and the stadium is highly efficient at handling not only the crowds, but does pretty well in the food category as well. Our location close to the stadium has never enhanced our chances. Only hard work, excellent competition, good leadership and some good solid grit has helped us climb the very steep ladder of Indiana/BOA bands. I am sure our students would love a trip to Texas some year. Carmel and Avon have both traveled across the country for Super Regionals.

      Delete
    16. Actually, I was just thinking that our weather plays havoc on our practices and wish we were in Florida or Texas right now so we could get outside to practice. Currently snow on the ground and 0-10 degrees and no place indoors to practice.

      Delete
    17. In 2017, Avon came down to Texas for the Super Regional in San Antonio and got 4th and then placed 2nd in Grand Nats. I think there is a travel disadvantage or just don't mess with Texas :)

      Delete
    18. Texas is arguably just as competitive or more competitive than Grand Nats at the super regional. There are just so many amazing Texas bands that can’t and don’t travel to grand nats that would reek havoc there.

    1. Because Hebron's 3rd place finish at Plano behind #1 ranked Flower Mound and #11 ranked Marcus carries more weight than Leander's second place finish at Austin behind #14 Vandegrift. The DFW regionals are usually more competitive so they carry more weight. Also Hebron ranked a good bit higher than Leander at the State Marching Contest.

You might also want to ask why Cedar Park is still ranked 8th nationally when they were 9th at San Antonio. It's not just about one contest. Non-BOA contests and even previous years seem to be taken into account as well (Hebron also did extremely well at Nats in 2015)...though with less weight as time goes on.

      Delete

      Delete
    3. Nonsense about the DFW regionals being more competitive than Austin. Austin has plenty of powerhouse programs on its own, and then San Antonio is added to the mix. DFW is very good, but top heavy, and not as deep as Austin/Central Texas.

      Delete
    4. Horn rank hasn’t updated yet, that’s why.

      Delete
    5. I expect Hebron to move ahead of Flower Mound and Avon after last weekend's SuperRegional in San Antonio. Just wish they were going to Grand Nationals this year - their show was something else - I didn't see CJT in the prelims, but I still thought Hebron's performance in the finals was a first place performance.

      Delete
  3. I know it's very early in the season but how do you rank bands that hasn't gone to competition yet?

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. This question is asked year after year, but they are ranked off of bits of information that comes in from the people that work with these bands and also some recordings of runs that may be out already.

    1. you might also want to ask why they make finals every single year, somehow they just do very well at all the BOA competitions

    2. Marian Catholic used to be like Broken Arrow. Making 1st in finals at Grand Nationals. But they've slowly started going down, but are still really good.

      Delete
    3. And are slowly rising back up to the top again!

      Delete
  5. Wow I giant mason drop. I would have still kept them above homestead because they had a higher score overall in prelims without the penalty. This was still higher than either score from homestead

    1. It’s mostly because other bands did much better in other prelims. They aren’t all the same but 5 point differences do make a large difference

  8. Last year’s results shouldn’t have any bearing. Senior classes graduate. Every year is different.

    ReplyDelete
  9. Ought to be some big adjustments after this weekend’s results.

  10. Not really sure how BA is ranked above Flower Mound. I understand BA has a history of excellence but the show this year is a trainwreck

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. They wouldn't be ranked higher than Flower Mound but Flower Mound got beat by Hebron so Flowermound dropped from First.

      Delete
    2. It's not only a train wreck, it's a recycle train wreck. The cars are different, the tricks are the same. Not sure how they won St. Louis...or how Lincoln, SD finished so low.

      Delete
    3. I really enjoyed Lincoln's show as well! I also felt they should have finished higher along with Bentonville.

      Delete
    4. I'd say BA did pretty good this year for their show being a trainwreck. They really came a long way this year and proved they could put on a stunning show even with a very young band with more than half of them who have never been to grand nats before.

      Delete
    5. I dont think it's right Broken arrow has really gone down hill over the last few years and last year my schools band the blue springs Golden Regiment Took 3rd place at Grand Nationals over Broken Arrow but we are still behind them in the rankings I dont think its right

  11. Question: Fort Mill High School (SC) beat Dobyns-Bennett at the Winston Salem regional, how would that affect the top 30 scores? Would FM potentially make it on and DB drop a bit, or will DB just drop a bit? Or nothing at all?

    ReplyDelete
  12. Nice job O'Fallon. Now Bring It!!!

    1. I saw the show in St Louis and it was good. I thought they would place a spot or 2 higher.

      Delete
    2. Lincoln was the most entertaining show we saw in St. Louis. I was shocked they weren't several places higher, even top 5.

      Delete
    3. Will you be posting the top 30 for this week?

      Delete
  14. Lincoln's show this year is incredible!

I'm a Texas band guy (Cedar Park parent, lifelong marching band fan), but Norwin PA looks like they have a solid show. Their PIMBA performance at Deer Lakes was solid but ultimately they may suffer from the lack of GE that plagues PA bands.

As for the Super Regional in Texas, I think that Vandergrift may make a move as they looked amazing at UIL region now that the show is completed. CTJ better have their best show of the year.

I am really looking forward to the wrap up of the season. I think Grand Nats is going to have a few surprises.

    ReplyDelete
  15. Why isn’t Ayala in the top 30? They’re a 9 time BOA regional champion and 2 time grand nat finalist. Just Saturday they placed second to Carmel and the gap was small. Y’all need to update the list.

  17. Dripping Springs TX looked FANTASTIC last weekend at the Texas Area D 5A show in Cedar Park. Really well executed and they played their hearts out.

    ReplyDelete
  18. The San Antonio Super Regional final was amazing! A few surprises according to these rankings. I wish all of these bands could make Grand Nats.

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. All of these comps are pay to play, correct?

      Delete
  19. I really wish CTJ was going to Nationals!!! That was the best thing I've seen in years! Seen Carmel and Avon a lot, but CTJ was unreal!!!

    ReplyDelete
  20. I know not a lot of the country gets to see American Fork (now winner of six straight St George regional titles), but there is no way they are not a top 30 band in the country. They are an easy semi-finalist every time they go to GN and they would either win or take 2nd to Ayala at a CA regional. I'm not sure there is even a question about that, so how they are not even in your "next 10" is just sort of amazing.

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. Just wait for them to update it on Tuesday.

      Delete
    2. Tuesday should be fun to see. I see the top 10 staying the same, just shuffled. 11-20 there should be some big movement though.

      Delete
    3. Really? There should be a lot of movement. Car, CTJ, Her, Avon, FM, is the way I see top 5.

  21. How is James Bowie ranked ahead of Cedar Ridge even though Cedar Ridge has placed ahead of them at two contests this season?

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. Because the rankings are flawed and inaccurate. Whoever ranks the bands needs to be replaced.

      Delete
    2. Agree that the rankings are flawed, because Vandegrift finished 3rd at State UIL ahead of Reagan, Hebron, CTJ and Leander, yet they are ranked 11th behind all of those bands. Appears that BOA placements are given higher weighting in the rankings than UIL placements.

      Delete
    3. That is correct, BOA placements are given higher weighting than UIL placements.

      Delete
  22. Curious how Grain Valley compares to size of the other schools. Are they the only 2A school in top 40?

    ReplyDelete
  23. Nice bounce back for DB, pretty amazing actually guess we shouldn't put so much stock in those early season performances. They are a quality group I should have never underestimated them. Lesson learned.

    ReplyDelete
  24. Why is Round Rock so low if they made finals at grand nats?

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. Grand Nats just wasn't as competitive as last year. They had a great start to the season placing high in Austin but they placed 7th at Conroe, and then at the San Antonio super regional despite having 14 finalist Round Rock didn't get into finals. Which was tough for even the top bands especially with Avon making their way down. Although it could be for other reasons I had nothing to do with determining the rankings.

      Delete
  25. No be honest, I really think North Hardin belongs somewhere on here.

    ReplyDelete
  26. I have nothing against Winston Churchill, however, I just do not understand why they are on the "Next Ten" list. To start off at BOA Austin they barely made it in to finals by 0.25 points and beating Westwood High School for the spot. I could by wrong but, wasn't Westwood's sound board destroyed when it started burning up? For this the judges are not supposed to count off, but indirectly this can hurt a team because it can add to General Effect. Anyway, later in the season, in BOA San Antonio, Churchill did not preform well placing 21st. They were behind Pearland, Westwood, and Cy-Fair who are not in the "Next Ten". They are definitely known as a very good band, but this year, I just was not as impressed.

  27. American fork ut......are u kidding me

  28. Look out for Cedar Park this season. They have one of the best high school opening hits that I've seen in years! If the rest of the show follows that they are a force to be reckoned with this season.

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. They had a huge incoming freshman class. This wasn't their year. They will run better next year.

      Delete
  29. Cedar Park is good this year, but Leander's opening hit and opener in general are incredible.

    ReplyDelete
  30. Really hoping that Mason cracks the top 30 this week. They had a great comeback from last year at the BG Regional.

    ReplyDelete
  31. Looking for this week's rankings...

    ReplyDelete
  32. Just a question... Why isn't CTJ ahead of Arrow? I am not from Texas or OK, so I have no dog in the fight, but CTJ actually was in a competition and won.

    ReplyDelete
  33. CTJ gets no love or credit. Not sure why.

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. It's too much. It's like they want to win based on the number of props. They have a lot of talent, let that shine and stop trying to out prop everyone. That Whataburger sponsorship doesn't solve everything.

      Delete
  34. But Jenks beat Union by almost a whole point and they still aren't ranked. Confusion.

    ReplyDelete

    1. Yes but Bixby beat both union, jenks, and owasso, and still isn´t in the top 40

  35. I'm confused, Cy-Fair for 5th at boa houston right behind number 17 James Bowie yet they arent even mentioned near top 30 on hornrank

    ReplyDelete
  36. Wait where's Cy fair they got 5th at the houston regional and were ahead of Winston Churchill by 4 places and behind James Bowie

    ReplyDelete
  37. Ok so both Oak Ridge and Seven Lakes beat Churchill pretty handily yet Churchill is in the next 10. wut

    ReplyDelete
  38. Why is Reagan ahead of Flomo when Flomo won DFW?

    ReplyDelete

    1. FloMo settled it yesterday. That had an awesome run and a very colorful show. Well done and they are the champions. They earned it.

  47. Del Rio Tx. Mighty Rams keeps getting cheated out /// when it’s so obvious that they are among the best on top , everybody from the band community including other schools are stunned that they keep putting Del Rio down but it’s ok everyone knows who the True best bands are ,it’s just sad that they cover their eyes n ears to recognize this .

  50. Ayala was literally just named the Utah state champion and BOA champion last Saturday and they are ranked #31? 🧐

    ReplyDelete
  51. San Antonio Super Regionals are done. According to knowledgeable pundits it is the deepest competitive roster to date. Grand Nats will have the top few bands, but Texas finals list would likely top all but the top two or three Indy bands.

Texas has a DEEP bench of talent.

Great Season Texas! See you next year.

    ReplyDelete
  52. So you kept Fishers in the next 10 however you removed Lawrence Township who scored above them in Finals at the Indy Super Regional??

    1. Lawrence Township didn't even make ISSMA State Finals, but Fishers got fourth.

  53. Where is Del Río at a Super Regional finalst, in fact where is Del Río in Top 30 at San Antonio. Where is Del Río at the State Marching Contest, Where is Del Río at Area Finals. You can keep complaining about your band not being on some list but they clearly haven’t shown they deserve to be on the list just saying

    ReplyDelete
  54. SA Super Regionals Finals was incredible. They all stayed in Texas this year for 6A State but most will be headed to Grand Nats next year. And by the way, check out these results:

    1) Vista Ridge
    2) Flower Mound
    3) Vandegrift
    4) Hebron
    5) Leander
    6) Ronald Reagan
    7) Claudia Taylor Johnson
    8) Keller
    9) Woodlands
    10) Marcus
    11) Cedar Ridge
    12) Waxahachie

    1. Those are the State UIL results from November 6, not the SA Super Regionals results from November 4. The SA Super Regionals results were:

      1) Flower Mound
      2) Ronald Reagan
      3) Hebron
      4) Vista Ridge
      5) Claudia Taylor Johnson
      6) Leander
      7) Vandegrift
      8) The Woodlands
      9) Keller
      10) Cedar Ridge
      11) Marcus
      12) Robert E. Hendrickson
      13) Westlake
      14) L.D. Bell

Mostly the same bands but with a slightly different order. The judging criteria for UIL differ from the BOA criteria.

  55. Are the rankings not going to be updated after Grand Nats?

    ReplyDelete
  56. 18 - Homestead
    19 - Jenks
    20 - William Mason

You DO realize that Mason beat both of those bands in both semifinals AND finals at GN, right?

I might agree with Jenks over Mason based on where I thought they should finish, but Homestead? Makes me question the robustness of the process.

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. This is based off a survey submitted by around 30 people, not just one person.

      Delete
    2. Which makes having the order of finish at GN being ignored even more suspicious. ONE opinion is just that - an opinion. Thirty people (if that's the real number) viewing the results couldn't all get it backwards.

      Delete
  57. I’m a Mason mom, and all I can say is that I am so happy that the program is back on track, that we made it to finals and that were even in this top 30 list. Those kids worked very hard to bring it back. And they will continue to get better in the coming years. Just sad that I have a junior and only 1 more year of this...

  59. That Rosemount - Wes Cartwright combo looks really dangerous. Rosemount beat Blue Springs in prelims, then place 2nd in finals. If not for a giant visual score from one of the judges, a 1.0+ over the field, it would have been Rosemount winning the Iowa regional.

    ReplyDelete
  60. Call me biased as a Rosemount parent, but we are definitely among the top 20 this year - As the previous commentator said, we lost to Blue Springs in the Iowa Super Regional yesterday, due to a visual score that was 1.0+ lower than them, but we were still only 0.25 lower in total points! Couldn't be prouder of our band.

  61. Umm i don't really know much about boa since i live in the northeast, would you guys ever consider putting a list for calvacade of bands, or USbands? also where do you guys think you would rank Nazareth area high school? please ignore our 2017 show though it sucked. :)

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. They usually don't look at bands that don't compete in boa since boa is the generally the most prestigious marching competitions out there. Unless you go to a famous state show or beat a band already on the list then you will have a good shot at making the list but after thirty it starts getting difficult to rank since the bubble is so big

      Delete
    2. That does make sense, I was just wondering if maybe they could also making a rankings list for just USBands, or Calvacade of Bands. I know there are a few bands out there that aren't in BOA that are just as good as the top ten. Like they could have a little thing at the top of the website where you could choose what competition circuit you want to see rankings of. Just ideas though, they're probably not going to do it lol.

      Delete
  62. If taking into rankings from previous years still affects the rankings on here then why is Blue Springs,MO down in 16th place when last year at BOA Grand National's championship BLUE SPRINGS Took 3rd place in the Nation over Broken Arrow and received the espirit de corps award to me this is complete and utter nonsense

      Delete
    3. This band would not rank in the top 32, although they performed very well. They would have to attend a BOA competition to know for sure how far out they are.
