Top 30 Rankings — Oct. 4, 2016 (Week 4)

Top 30 Rankings — Oct. 4, 2016 (Week 4)

This is a set of rankings from an older poll. We keep all our polls online for archival purposes. You might want to view the current Top 30 rankings or read how we determine rankings.

If you care enough about band to check our weekly rankings updates, you probably are or know a senior who plans on pursuing a degree in music education. Music For All has a few scholarships for precisely that kind of person. The scholarships will be announced during the Grand National Championships on Nov. 12, but the deadline for directors to nominate students is Sunday, Oct. 30. Find out more information on the scholarship page.

Now it's time for this week's rankings.

There aren't very many adjustments this week because most of the results from this weekend were almost exactly what we expected.

Mason had a rather decisive victory in Toledo, Ohio, and the top half of the Conroe Regional placed just like we predicted.

Nation Ford's victory at Jacksonville was enough to push them into the Next 10, but didn't earn them a spot on the Top 30. We'll watch how they perform at Winston-Salem and Atlanta and a good showing there could move them onto the list.

We're looking forward to this weekend's showdown at Plano and can imagine some significant changes to next week's rankings might be in store. Make sure to follow us on Twitter, Facebook, and Instagram for updates throughout the competition.

The previous week's rankings are in parenthesis. Read about how we determine rankings.

    1. Scores are adjusted to fit the bands in one conpetition with other bands in the same competition. You can't compare scores between competitions because they're not adjusted to fit the bands not present in the other show. BOA is a very subjective sport, but it's not fair to say much about rankings until all these bands go to the same conpetition. Until then, these speculations are our best shot

    2. Have you seen Mason's show though? I don't think you realize how amazing it is. To get an 86 this early in the season is astounding. They should definitely be WAY higher...

    3. The only way to explain that is the way the previous person did. You can't compare scores from different competitions because of how subjective it is. An 86 at whatever competition Mason went to is probably not the same as an 86 in any other competition. The judges for each are different and the scoring for each is different. At Austin, vandegrift won with a score of 80.5 while next weekend at Conroe, the top 4 bands had scores of 80.95 or higher with the champion (Reagan) earning an 84.7. Not to bag on any of the competitions and their difficulties, but I believe Austin is a much more "stacked" competition and the scores were significantly lower. All I'm saying is that actual numbers in a score do not carry outside of that individual competition, as each competition is completely separate.

    4. And for the record I watched the live stream and LOVE Mason this year like I always do, but the only fair comparison is if both bands are at the same competition. Until then it's just predictions and that's fine. Plus it's not like these predictions are set in stone and we'"@ find out just how agead Mason is against Avon at Nationals

  2. As predicted earlier this week PCEP not in poll or next ten with a nice score in Toledo, and Nation Ford is in next Ten. As we learned earlier this week (see last weeks comments) from Mr Wooten that a score of almost 81 (5 points behind Mason) is not good enough to be top 30, yet I see three bands from Texas that fit that description in the top 30. If opinion is not used very high in this poll then please show me the part of your formula that makes those bands so much better. Also why do you have so many bands as place holders with no competition results this year.

  3. Conroe was AMAZING! You should have been there. 2 2016 GN bands finishing 1-2, and the 2013 GN Champ finishing 3rd. Austin was probably the hardest Regional in the nation to make Finals (8 of those 10 finalists are now in this poll's Top 30, 3 of whom are GN-bound), but the Conroe top 5 were as strong as the Austin top 5. So proud of all the bands. Can't wait for Plano this weekend. A special note to all those who want to complain about why some particular band isn't "ranked": IT'S A POLL. It is impossible to compare every band in the nation every week. Bands have their own competition schedule and bands get better each week. The producers of this poll have their methodology. If you don't like it, stop returning to the site. Some bands are blessed with geography - Texas has 4 Regionals and a Super-Regional. That gives all Texas bands as many BOA opportunities as they want. But Texas also has UIL and it's a 6A State year, so all the big bands in the state are pushing hard for that and may be skipping a BOA event along the way. But not all bands in the nation have as many BOA opportunities as we do in Texas. Therefore, this website may not have as many chances to see how wonderful your band is. So my advice to you, whether you are a fellow parent or a student, is to just support your program and not worry about a poll. If your band is fortunate enough to compete at GN, then at the end of the season you will know where you stack up against the other bands in attendance. Polls will then have to fit in other great bands who do not attend GN.

  4. Mr JPK you're purposely being obtuse at this point. If you don't like the poll, do what Texas Band Parent says - stop trashing it and leave. Obviously it's not going to be perfect, but I defy you to tell me that one of these bands does not belong on the poll. I think they've just about smashed it with these rankings, and if you disagree, well then cool. But don't come pushing your unfounded negativity on the rest of us. I want to sincerely say - best of luck to Centerville, PCEP, and any other band you might be partial to moving forward, I hope they earn a spot in the poll and that people on this site don't dislike them now because of your boneheaded comments.

    1. Wow you sound like the negative bonehead Mr Sam, I'm not being negative or obtuse. I have great respect for Texas bands I have seen many over the years (I said that previously). I'm only pointing out with the scores out there, the local Mid-west bands are just as good or better, if those bands from Texas are in there then so should other bands. I never ever said those bands are bad or undeserving at no time. I'm sure you have never seen many bands from the Mid-west. Just because some of the regionals are more competitive than others doesnt make them any less deserving. To compare apples to apples you use scores, and some of the same judges are used at many regionals. The judges judge the same things and use the same criteria throughout BOA. If I want to look at the polls and make comments I will. So take your negative comments and go elsewhere yourself.

    2. Oh boy... For starters, apples to apples would be an eye test, not scores, because as multiple people have explained, SCORES DON'T HOLD UP BETWEEN EVENTS. Second, I live in the Midwest and attend Grand Nats and Indy every year. Third, to the best of my knowledge (correct me if I'm wrong) there's been no overlap in judges from Dayton, Toledo, and the Texas regionals...

    3. Ladies, ladies, you're both pretty. Can you guys just email each other and fight there?

    4. Multiple people with what qualifications, its their opinion. Unless those people are judges, its opinion. Scores and this poll are the only measure unless someone watches everything. There is overlap in judging just don't know about texas and the mid-west and don't care.

    5. Scores mean nothing outside of the competition they are at, even if some judging overlap happens. I believe some Texas bands over over ranked on here, but you don't see me arguing with multiple people about it. Please don't make any more of a fool of yourself and stop bringing negativity to this. Its a fun thing, and you are taking it way to seriously.
P.S. I am not the "Unknown" listed earlier in the comments

    6. You can have your opinion and I'll have mine. Scores are used in this poll see last weeks comment by Wooten (who is one of the Editors). So I'm not being foolish or negative the only negativity came from someone named Sam. I'm just supporting local bands who arent getting the recognition they deserve, that isnt foolish or negative.
