Top 30 Rankings — Nov. 6, 2018 (Week 8)

San Antonio always manages to completely scramble our rankings. Whatever we expect heading into San Antonio tends to be nowhere near close to the actual results produced. It's never surprising, that's just what happens when you have such a large number of exceptional groups at a single competition.

Super Regional champion Flower Mound slid up to third place after earning their third San Antonio championship in just four years. Second-place Ronald Reagan retained their fifth place spot in the rankings after earning the silver medal. Vista Ridge's rather historic season kept them near the top of the rankings. Westlake and LD Bell were two surprises that earned spots in finals and returned to this week's Top 30.

Outside of Texas, Ayala and Vista Murrieta went head-to-head in Southern California. After trailing Vista Murrieta most of the season in local competitions, Ayala made a decisive leap ahead and finished first in both prelims and finals. Ayala also swept captions in both rounds. This strong showing pushed them back into the rankings and slid Vista Murrieta just outside.

As we prepare for Grand Nationals this weekend, you'll notice only 12 groups in the Top 30 are even attending Grand Nats, which may give you a glimpse of our expected finalists. When you include the first out and next 10, that brings the total to only 15 groups that seem in the best position to make finals. Five of those groups have never made national finals before.

  1. Vista Ridge brought it and placed 4th at BOA San Antonio Super Regional! Pretty awesome achievement! (not to mention UIL 6A State Champions!)

  2. Not sure why Coppell isn't yet in the next 10... And Vista ridge below Hebron?

  3. I don't think the UIL competition was taken into consideration for these rankings. That will probably be reflected in next weeks rankings.

    1. Not sure UIL factors into the ranking process.

    2. It does, they did it last week with area placings

  4. Umm how is Bowie ahead of LD Bell when they didnt make finals at San Antonio but Bell did? And Cedar Ridge also beat Marcus???

  5. Go Lockport Porters! See you in Indy!

  6. Go Lockport Porters! See you in Indy!

  7. how is Carmel 4th??????????? They haven't lost in 3 years...

  8. I'm curious if Silver at State helps ranking?

  9. Ranking info..
"Reputable advisors submit their rankings every week. These are converted into a weighted number system and accounts for a portion of the overall rankings.
Scores and placements from BOA competitions with weight based on how recently the competition occurred, with finals scores and placements carrying slightly more weight than prelims scores and placements. Scores and placements from non-BOA events are taken into account, just not as much as those from BOA events.
Strength of schedule and notable competition such as Blue Springs beating four national finalists in 2013 at San Antonio carries more weight than American Fork three pointing and sweeping captions at St. George just about every year.
Notable caption placements such as Vandegrift winning the music caption in 2013 at San Antonio, Harrison placing 3rd in music GE in 2013 at Grand National Finals shows excellence against leading competition."

  10. Is there a chance for Flower Mound to rise further in the ranking if not going to Grand Nats? Or will Grand Nats likely push all not attending down in the rankings. Just curious. Thanks all! So many great shows in San Antonio this past week. Congrats to all BOA and UIL finalists and champions! We need these shows televised for real!
