Top 30 Rankings — Oct. 2, 2018 (Week 3)

Top 30 Rankings — Oct. 2, 2018 (Week 3)

The rankings received a major shake up this week, with 25 of the 30 groups finishing in new positions this week. These changes were primarily fueled by BOA regionals in Austin, Bowling Green, and Clarksville as well as competitions in Bedford, Blue Springs, and Owasso.

The top eight groups from this weekend's Austin Regional earned spots in the Top 30, with the other two finalists remaining in the Next 10. The most significant movement came Vista Ridge, a group that was already trending upward, but made an even bigger shift this week after winning the visual caption and placing fourth overall.

A big win for O'Fallon in Clarksville, earned the group its highest ever placement in the rankings, sliding all the way up to 19th place. Results from Clarksville also helped Franklin earn a spot back on the Top 30 and kept Castle in the rankings just down a couple spots. William Mason's victory in Bowling Green helped them slide back into the Top 30 as well.

Results from the Owasso Invitational weren't enough to push Union out of the rankings — or pull Bixby or Jenks into them — but it did cause Union to stumble all the way to 30th place. They'll compete again this weekend in Bedford, where we'll see if last weekend's scores were just a fluke.

Two groups made their premieres on the Top 30: Prosper and Timber Creek. At the HEB marching contest, Prosper finished first in prelims, ahead of bands like Marcus, Keller, and Haltom. In finals, Prosper finished third behind Marcus and Keller, but within a rather small margin, less than one point. Timber Creek's reputation continues to grow after winning the Midland Regional a week ago. This weekend, they'll go up against the best bands across DFW at the Bedford Regional.

  1. I find it very interesting how Franklin leaps into the top 30 at position 24 above regional winners with a second place finish. While other second and third place finishers don’t see that at all or even show up in your rankings. There wouldn’t be any bias would there since you are from Franklin.

    1. The difference is none of these other second place finishers beat a consistent national finalist and by more than a 1 point margin, so the algorithm really boosts them and O'Fallon. I would say both O'Fallon and Franklin's placements are rather overinflated, but it should slowly correct itself over the course of the season as super regionals occur, and especially after Grand Nats.
