About
The 2016 San Antonio Super Regional was held Nov. 4–5 at the Alamodome. Flower Mound won decisively, earning first place from every judge in finals.

Flower Mound has quickly established itself as the top group in the nation. Winning San Antonio two years in a row is quite impressive, and a planned trip to Grand Nationals next year could result in a national title. But only if they continue to perform at the level they have the past two seasons.

The Woodlands followed right behind FloMo, earning second place in both prelims and finals. The group will also be returning to Grand Nats in 2017 and could give FloMo a run for their money.

Third and fourth place were claimed by two groups that are heading to Grand Nats this year. Leander and Claudia Taylor Johnson will be the two highest-ranked Texas bands competing at Grand Nats, but fellow San Antonio-finalists Ronald Reagan and Cedar Park have also been mentioned as likely finalists and potentially even medalists.

The four were separated by Hebron, Marcus, and Vandegrift. Hebron and Marcus, along with Flower Mound, make up an elite trio of Lewisville ISD schools who continue to prove they're some of the best in Texas.

Vandegrift is a relatively new school that has continued to make impressive statements every year. In 2013, the group won the music caption in San Antonio finals, ahead of eventual national champion The Woodlands. This year, the group earned third in prelims, beating Flower Mound in general effect. In finals, they found themselves neck-and-neck with a huge group of Texas' elite in the top half of finals.

Winston Churchill and Hendrickson earned 11th and 12th places, concluding an exciting season that saw these two groups aim to separate themselves from the huge number of Texas groups more than qualified for a spot in finals here. We hope to see both groups back in finals next year.

Cypress Falls earned 14th place, narrowly defeating former national finalist Cedar Ridge and former national champion LD Bell for the last spot in finals. This close cut-off perfectly illustrates how Texas is on a whole different level of competition than any other state.

Analysis
Twelve returning finalists.

That might make you think there are two open spots, but there aren't. When you factor in Leander and Hendrickson, which were unable to compete in 2015 because of weather-related issues, and LD Bell, which placed second at the Atlanta Super Regional, there are significantly more groups that deserve a finals spot than there are finals spots available.

The potentially over-hyped front runner

Flower Mound could complete their second season of winning every BOA event they attend, if they win this weekend. In 2015, they placed first at the Arlington Regional and the San Antonio Super Regional. This year, they've already won the Plano Regional by a huge margin. I'm serious. No other group was even close to Flower Mound, and I can't see anyone being able to catch them.

The groups that could catch FloMo

There are really only two groups that could possibly steal the title from Flower Mound, and it won't be an easy task.

Ronald Reagan placed first at Conroe earlier this season. They earned second place at last year's San Antonio Super Regional, so it's very possible that they could steal the champion title from FloMo this year. Reagan will have a busy week of band as they are competing at the super regional, the UIL State Championships, and the Grand National Championships within seven days. A good performance here at San Antonio could set them up for a national title the next weekend.

Vandegrift went from two years of placing 10th at San Antonio, to being in contention for the title. They're really pushing this year, taking some risks, and are being rewarded for it, starting with a victory at the Austin Regional. Maybe they'll eventually decide to go to Grand Nats, so the rest of the country can be blessed by their presence.

The strong core

Texas is full of so many talented groups, it's really impossible to guess how these middle pack of groups will place.

Cedar Park finished fourth at the Austin Regional and fifth place at last year's San Antonio. The band is headed to Grand Nats, so this isn't the end of their season. And since they're 5A in UIL, Cedar Park doesn't have to worry about a state competition right before they head off to Indianapolis.

Claudia Taylor Johnson got third at the Austin Regional and second at the Conroe Regional. Their show is a band nerd's dream, incorporating excerpts from the world's best judge's tape. Although we don't have them in the running for the champion title, it's not out of the question. CTJ was the 2014 San Antonio champion and won the prelims competition just last season.

Hebron gets to add their name to the list of bands that inspired a BOA rule change, after winning Grand National Semifinals, but earning third in finals, supposedly because of their first-on performance slot. So far this year, they've earned third place at the Plano Regional and we'll see if this top-half, bottom-half draw for finals performance slots will help them out this year. Though I will say, fourth at San Antonio and third at Grand Nats is not a record to be ashamed of.

LD Bell took fourth place at the Plano Regional and will be returning to the San Antonio Regional after taking a trip to Atlanta last year. At Atlanta, they received second place behind Tarpon Springs, but all super regionals are not created equal and even placing in the top half is going to be a challenge.

Leander won prelims at the Austin Regional by about 2 points, but ultimately took home second place in finals. Not too shabby for a group that can consistently hang with some of the best bands in the nation. They're heading to Indy next week for Grand Nats and will certainly be in discussion for a class AAA medal, if not a class champion position.

on Oct. 8, 2016. // Photo by Jeremiah Wooten
Marcus is really good this year. They always sound incredible, but this year, they're bringing along a visual package that is really captivating. Although they earned lower placements than they usually do at this weekend's UIL Area competition, they have an excellent show this year and have already earned second place at the Plano Regional earlier this season.

Round Rock took home seventh place from last year's Grand Nats after finishing ninth at San Antonio. This year, they've continued to compete at a high level, placing fifth at Austin.

The Woodlands placed third at the Conroe Regional. Last year, the group took home seventh at San Antonio and sixth at Grand Nats. This year, they had some rather shocking UIL Area results, placing behind several groups we aren't used to seeing in front of the former national champion. Some of that can be blamed on the classic craziness of the UIL adjudication system, but some can not.

Upper bubble

I'm not sure which bubble is crazier: San Antonio or Grand Nats. Fortunately, San Antonio has 14 finals spots instead of 12, so it’s slightly less impossible to make the cut off.

Hendrickson was unfortunately unable to compete at San Antonio last year because of weather-related issues. But this year, they've already taken home eighth place at Austin, then fourth at Conroe. We're expecting big things from the Hawk Band this year, but no group is guaranteed a finals spot.

James Martin has made huge strides this year, placing seventh at the Plano Regional after both missing finals at Arlington and placing 31st at San Antonio last year. It would be awesome to end this exciting year with an appearance in super regional finals, and we think, theoretically, this is just the show to help push them over the top.

Keller took home 11th place at Grand Nats last year, but it's pretty well accepted than any San Antonio finalist can make Grand National finals. Earlier this year, they earned sixth place at Plano.

Vista Ridge earned sixth place at the Austin Regional. Although they placed 20th at last year's San Antonio Super Regional, they seem to be taking a whole new approach and are really having a great season.

Winston Churchill will complete their huge BOA Texas tour at San Antonio this year. They've already competed at three of four regionals in the state, making finals each time, and what better way to end the season with a pair of performances at San Antonio. First they earned seventh place at the Austin Regional, then fifth place at the Conroe Regional, and finally eighth at the Plano Regional. Last year, they grabbed seventh place at the Atlanta Super Regional, but even just getting 14th at San Antonio is a difficult task.

Lower bubble

Cedar Ridge earned 12th place at San Antonio last year, but with the overwhelming number of new and improved bands competing this year, their 10th place finish at the Austin Regional won't guarantee them a spot in finals.

Cypress Falls took home sixth place at the Atlanta Super Regional last year, but San Antonio is a whole different beast. Making finals here will be a much tougher task.

Friendswood has to be included as a possibility because they were the first group out of finals last year. This year, they have a lot of ground they'll need to make up after taking 19th place at Conroe.

The Woodlands College Park has had some drastic swings in placements over the past few years. When they placed 14th at Conroe last year, they took 18th place at San Antonio. If you do the math, that means their sixth place finish at Conroe this year should earn them a finals spot at San Antonio, right? We'll find out this weekend.

Wakeland took home 14th place at San Antonio last year. This year, they were the first band out of finals at the Plano Regional. Although we were happy to see Waxahachie make finals in Plano, it was sad to see a great group like Wakeland not performing in finals.

Westlake was just two spots out of finals at San Antonio last year, placing 16th overall in prelims. This year, they've earned ninth place at the Austin Regional and have a shot to be performing in Saturday night.

This was not fun to predict

There are so many groups here that would easily be making finals if they went to any other super regional in the country. San Antonio has been and continues to be the most competitive event right up there with Grand Nats.

We'll be in San Antonio the whole weekend, so make sure to follow us on Twitter, Facebook, and Instagram for live updates throughout the weekend. We can't wait to see how the results play out!

About
The 2016 Indianapolis Super Regional was held Nov. 4–5 at Lucas Oil Stadium. Avon won prelims and finals just one week before they'll compete again for the national championship.

It's not unusual to see Avon and Carmel battling for the top spot, but there was another group that found itself right between Avon and Carmel. Blue Springs won second place in the prelims competition, shocking everyone, before falling to fifth in finals. It was a very impressive outcome that is a good sign for next season, when they are expected to return to the Grand National Championships.

As was expected, Homestead and Marian Catholic finished neck-and-neck, and in good position to remain in national finals next week. Centerville and Castle concluded the top half.

Analysis
The Indianapolis Super Regional will be action-packed as always in 2016. Although it’s use as a direct predictor of Grand Nationals may be diminished this year because of the low number of groups competing at both Indy Super and Grand Nats, it will be no less important to the bands who participate.

At the top

Avon and Carmel make up the top tier yet again. As two of the most well respected and successful bands in the country, it should come as no surprise that they top our list by a fair margin. Their scores on the Indiana state circuit so far this year have been very tight, but Avon has slowly pulled ahead the last few weeks.

Blue Springs (MO) performs at the Golden Regiment
Invitational on Oct. 1, 2016. // Photo by Jeremiah Wooten
Blue Springs is the only other band we could see potentially competing with the two Indiana titans. It’s a bit of a stretch to suggest that they beats either or take any captions, but the fact that we aren’t willing to put all our eggs in one basket and say it’s completely impossible shows just how far this program has come in just a few show years.

The next five

Marian Catholic may be the hardest band to predict in the country. Are they good? Yes, one of the greatest programs to ever exist. Do they score well before the end of the season? Not usually. Fortunately for them, Indianapolis is only a week before Grand Nats this year, so we should be entering the “here comes Marian Catholic” home stretch. For this reason, fourth seems about right.

Castle performs at the Clarksville Regional
on Sept. 24 2016. // Photo by Jeremiah Wooten
Castle and Homestead have been neck and neck at state circuit competitions this year and there is no reason to expect something different this weekend. Castle has been extremely impressive all year, starting with their win at Clarksville, and although Homestead has seen their scores go down over the past few years, they still perform at an extremely high level. The results at this contest should be extremely helpful in predicting both programs’ placements at Grand Nats.

Center Grove has consistently beaten Lawrence Township and other really good Indiana groups, but has also finished significantly behind Castle and Homestead so far this year. We see no reason that should change here.

North Hardin is a very solid program and although their placement at Clarksville was not quite as impressive as we had hoped for, they tend to improve towards the end of the year, as many good bands do, making them a fairly easy choice for a finals spot.

Eight bands for six spots

The bottom end of this year’s competition is considerably less clear than the top. There seems to be eight bands jockeying for a place in finals, with some being much more likely to make it than others.

Brownsburg is a program on the up and up. After adding former Broken Arrow assistant director Chris Kaflik to their staff, they’ve created a show unlike anything they've done before. It's paying off with really impressive placements throughout the season. However, a finals spot isn't guaranteed. They're going to need to really keep pushing to make it a reality.

Carroll just barely sneaked into finals last year and it’s possible they do the same again. However, their recent placements have not been as high as some of the other bands in this grouping, so we aren’t too high on their chances.

Centerville did well at the Dayton regional early this year, and though a lot can change in a few weeks, it is difficult to imagine them missing finals. If they do miss finals, it would not be the first time. In 2014, they had similar early season success, but was unable to secure a finals spot at Indy Super. A lot can happen in a few weeks.

Fishers has been impressive so far in their return to the BOA circuit, placing fifth at Dayton. We didn’t give them much thought at the beginning of the year but now they’ve proved us wrong and set themselves up to have a great shot at sneaking into finals on Saturday.

Lawrence Township has been consistently in finals at Indy Super since their creation in 2014. Although they have since struggled to make finals at Grand Nats, this season, they have continued to perform among the best bands in Indiana each week.

Lincoln-Way is in their first year of existence, after following in Lawrence Township's footsteps by creating an all-district band. Earlier this season, they've been able to hold their own against some great Illinois groups like Prospect. If they're able to grab this last spot in finals, that would be a great ending to a season full of firsts.

Madison Central is one of the best bands in Kentucky, consistently challenging and even defeating North Hardin at state championships. However, there is a difference between KMEA and BOA adjudication, so it's hard to guess exactly how they will place. Regardless, we're excited to see how Madison Central does this weekend.

Norwin is our final band in consideration for a finals spot, and while it’s easy to see why, it’s difficult to judge exactly how they will place. They’ve had what could be seen as down years recently, but this year's show and early season win at Monroeville seem to be putting them back on the right track. As one of the most storied programs in the country, it’s hard to count them out of anything, but this will be the toughest competition they’ve faced this year. Hopefully they can take the opportunity to make a statement.

Top 30 Rankings — Oct. 25, 2016 (Week 7)

This is a set of rankings from an older poll. We keep all our polls online for archival purposes. You might want to view the current Top 30 rankings or read how we determine rankings.

The St. Louis Super Regional was as intense as we expected. Bentonville did not advance to finals and the elite Oklahoma bands faced some stiff competition.

Broken Arrow's decisive victory shifts them up to the #2 position, which means the two best groups in the nation won't be attending the Grand National Championships. Blue Springs and Owasso also moved up a few spots, while Union move down a few spots.

Two other St. Louis finalists were able to grab spots in the Top 30 this week: Bellevue West, which earned fourth place in finals, and Rosemount, which slipped to seventh place in finals after placing third in prelims. This is the first time Bellevue West has ever appeared in the Top 30.

O'Fallon Township fell out of the Top 30, but rests safely in the Next 10.

In Indiana, Avon and Carmel faced off in state semifinals. Avon earned a much more decisive victory than they did at regionals, beating Carmel by 1.75 points and winning every judge except the visual individual judge. This caused them to move into the top five and sets them up in prime position as we move toward the Indianapolis Super Regional. Homestead narrowly beat Castle by a tenth of a point, causing them to jump to #20 and pushing Castle back a few spots.

Lastly, Performances at the San Jose Regional caused two new California groups to be featured in the Next 10. Clovis West won the regional with the GE caption, and Saratoga placed second with the music and visual captions. The two groups join Ayala, former Grand National finalist, for a total of three California bands in the Next 10.
